About the Role

Reporting to the Executive Producer and Senior Program Director, you will be responsible for producing dynamic, interesting and informative locally-focused content for 980 CKNW and nationally-focused content for 980 CKNW and its affiliates.

This position will require an individual with an insatiable curiosity to learn, a passion for current affairs and the ability to develop, produce and present entertaining and compelling talk radio segments.

This full-time role includes weekday responsibilities and weekend hosting responsibilities.


  • Research and develop original content for broadcast on CKNW’s weekday talkshows and other programs as needed
  • Provide an on-air presence on both talkshows (debriefs, montages, reports, investigative series etc.)
  • Develop stories for social and digital media audiences as well as broadcast
  • Prepare and host live, networked weekend late-night programs for 980 CKNW and its affiliates across Canada
  • Know what drives conversation and be a compelling storyteller
  • Fill-in hosting weekday talkshows as needed
  • Develop a comprehensive contact list and connections with the community
  • Collaborate with program hosts and producers on content and program support
  • Develop and contribute to breaking news and special programming
  • Editing of programming elements
  • Prepare background information for program hosts
  • Collaborate with other producers and hosts on story development and dialogue
  • Liaise with newsrooms and stay up to date on developing news stories
  • Update information on and be proficient with social media
  • Participate in pre and post show production meetings
  • Practice ethical principles of journalism
  • Meet and exceed ratings expectations
  • Perform other duties as required

What We Need From You:

  • Proven record of on-air performance
  • Self-starting attitude and the initiative to execute fresh, compelling radio
  • News experience, preferably in radio
  • Tenacious approach in convincing guests and news makers to be part of programming
  • Excellent organizational, communication & interpersonal skills
  • Strong and solid interviewing skills
  • Ability to write for all media platforms
  • Comprehensive knowledge of local and national news events
  • Expertise in audio editing
  • Understanding of WordPress
  • A proficiency with social media
  • Creative, energetic, fun, outgoing, positive, friendly manner and team player
