Xtra is one of the world’s leading LGBTQ2+ online publications. Published by Pink Triangle Press, the Toronto-based, independent, queer-run media company, Xtra is an award-winning digital magazine covering LGBTQ2+ politics, culture, community, sex, relationships and health. A new editorial strategy is underway, shifting Xtra’s focus to longform features, opinion, analysis, essays and explainers—all with a global audience in mind. We are also in the process of redesigning our website, expanding our storytelling formats to include video and audio documentaries and podcasting, and building our roster of contributors and partners.

This groundbreaking and feisty brand is looking for a creative and passionate Senior Editor, Culture to continue Xtra’s ambitious growth with excellent, boundary-expanding writing and multimedia storytelling in areas of arts, entertainment and pop culture.
The ideal candidate for the role of Senior Editor, Culture is a journalist with a deep knowledge of and passion for arts and entertainment, who also has a meaningful connection to LGBTQ2+ communities, issues and culture. We’re looking for someone fast, smart, funny and opinionated, with a strong point of view on the culture they love (and hate!). They should be adept at writing and editing a variety of formats, including quick reaction stories, interviews and profiles, essays, reviews and longform features.

The Senior Editor, Culture position can be based in Toronto, where Xtra’s office is located, or it can be remote.

What the job entails: *

  • With the support of the Executive Editor, the Senior Editor, Culture will oversee Xtra’s coverage of arts and entertainment (music, books, film and TV, performing and visual arts, pop culture). This includes conceiving of, approving, assigning, editing and packaging stories; coordinating the publication of stories with the copy editor, art department and social media editor
  • Collaborating with the video team and other editors on arts and culture stories in other formats and platforms (video, audio, social)

What you’ll bring:

  • A minimum of three years’ experience working as a journalist
  • Knowledge of LGBTQ2+ arts and culture, as well as arts and culture journalism
  • An understanding of the unique opportunities and best practices of digital storytelling and online journalism
  • Experience editing longform, news and opinion pieces; a supportive and respectful approach to working with writers from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
  • A strong sense of voice and style
  • An ability to find and develop new talent and voices
  • Experience in story packaging, display writing, SEO, layout and design, social media
  • Bonus skills: a familiarity with Xtra’s other core content (politics and identities, relationships and sex, health) and experience with video and audio storytelling
