The role

The Senior Director of CBC Music is comfortable working in a changing environment and has a vision for positioning CBC Music into the future. Being a musician oneself would be considered an asset, as well as a working knowledge of the Canadian music industry.

This role demands a creative, high-energy, seasoned executive who has a track record of driving strategy, managing teams and delivering music content across platforms.

We are seeking a leader with integrity, committed to developing people and who identifies as an ideas person and an industry leader.

In this role you are an effective communicator and a transformational leader who will help shape and implement the CBC Music strategy under the direction of the Executive Director of Radio and Audio. You will drive growth and engagement in CBC Music content, privileging Canadian music and Canadian artists both at home and on the global stage, across platforms.

As CBC Music content and products air and are posted on all platforms: radio, digital and television craft knowledge is an important asset in this role.

As well you should have a working knowledge of the CBC mission, its programming, and demonstrate commitment to our public service offer and what that encompasses in a digital age.

A deep knowledge of technology and music trends is key.

The Senior Director of CBC Music works as part of a leadership team of Senior Directors, reporting to the Executive Director of Radio and Audio. In addition, this position works across platforms and departments. In this role you will participate in setting strategy and will collaborate with others to ensure
that we are creating not only great music content, but fostering a creative work environment for a highly motivated and skilled team.

You are a leader who champions inclusivity in the work environment and within content we provide Canadians.


We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Undergraduate degree and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience at a senior management level.
  • Strong knowledge of the music industry and music trends, preferably with direct experience in content production
  • Extensive experience working in a multi-platform environment.
  • Hands-on experience working in music programming and/or digital environment.
  • Demonstrated success in planning and developing long-range projects and initiatives, both in daily content and in long term strategy.
  • Strong organizational and decision making skills with the ability to consolidate and integrate a wide range of inputs.
  • Proven ability to manage and develop others.
  • A proven track record of influence, innovation, creative thinking and leadership.
  • A proven track record for implementing and navigating through times of changes.
  • Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • A considerable amount of conflict resolution skills utilized both within and outside the department.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and deal with conflicting demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Some travel is required.
  • Ability to work in collaborative environments.
