Arts Department Chair

POSITION SUMMARY:

The York School is looking for an Arts Department Chair to support the areas of Drama, Music, Film and Visual Arts for a 3 year term starting the 2020/2021 school year. The term for the department chair role may change based on school needs. The successful candidate will report to the Principals of the Middle and Senior School and must teach at the MYP or Diploma level. The Arts Department Chair is responsible for overseeing the curriculum, planning, professional development and budgeting for the Arts department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership Expectations:

  • Establish a vision for the department, in conjunction with the department, principals, and IB coordinators
  • Lead regular Arts Department team meetings
  • Provide leadership toward the achievement of the highest possible level of excellence in the teaching, research and co-curricular activities of the department
  • Support the strategic goals of the school through all of the department’s programming decisions
  • Foster a spirit of sharing and mutual observation and feedback between department members
  • Provide peer feedback to department members about curriculum instruction and delivery
  • Promote and direct, in collaboration with the teachers of their discipline(s), the ongoing development of the curriculum and curriculum delivery within their discipline(s)
  • Ensure vertical alignment of the curriculum and make sure all curriculum is up to date.
  • Assist teachers to reach the specific goals set for their department
  • Help onboard new teachers to the department
  • Establish, in consultation with the teachers of their department, the professional development needs of the department
  • Help onboard new teachers to the department
  • Respond to questions, complaints, grievances and suggestions from the members of the department and other stakeholders
  • Work with the Director of Citizenship on the organization of major Arts events


Administrative

  • Meet with department a minimum of 4-6 times per year for planning and development
  • Regular meetings with Principals, Director of LIT, and IB Coordinators
  • Review all final exams for their discipline
  • The Department Chair is responsible for preparing and proposing budget requests, establishing expenditure priorities, and fairly and equitably administering the department budget, subject to the policies established by the Head of School and the CFO and for articulating the relationship between the budget and the department’s strategic plan
  • The Department Chair is responsible for recommending equipment and supplies for purchase, projecting space and equipment needs for the department and exercising general responsibility for departmental facilities and equipment
  • Oversee the arts equipment and supplies (musical instruments, film, drama and visual arts resources) and ensure inventory is in good order
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Ontario Teacher’s Certificate or equivalent
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • 5 years’ experience as a teacher of Drama, Music, Film and/or Visual Arts
  • MYP and DP experience considered an asset
  • Previous experience in a leadership position an asset
  • Highly motivated and energetic
  • Positive and collaborative team member
  • Flexible and adaptable.

COMPENSATION:

All Department Chair roles are compensated through a 20% relief in teaching time.
