JOB DESCRIPTION

Provide original news content for KTVU FOX 2, ktvu.com, and associated media partners by successfully accomplishing the following responsibilities: assess leads and pitch captivating stories; gather unique news information to write and research in-depth stories; conduct taped and live interviews; and be able to present material in a compelling and engaging manner to a board audience. Must contribute to social media efforts; write print stories with appropriate sourcing and style for publication online; initiate, research, and verify groundbreaking news stories; update and follow up on stories and communicate with managers and assignment editors about past, current and future stories. Additional duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary.

A successful candidate will demonstrate a history of exceptional news judgement, competitive reporting under deadline, and compelling storytelling of complex issues. Must have a broad working knowledge of police procedures, the California and federal criminal and civil court systems, and municipal, state and federal government operations, and a strong knowledge of legal and ethical parameters of reporting for mass media. Must be familiar with public records and First Amendment laws and techniques for obtaining public documents, data, and source materials. Must be able to independently collect, verify and decipher data and documents in support of news stories. Ability to fact check statements, data, documents, and think critically in all aspects of reporting. Must keep up-to-date on important news events, trends, and topics locally and nationally. Ability to work under stressful conditions and deadlines is a must. Cultivating and maintaining a strong roster of contacts and sources is required. Strong working knowledge of the technical aspects of television news production required, including digital and web-based newsgathering tools and techniques. Must be able to use newsroom computer systems, and possess expertise in researching material essential to putting together comprehensive news stories. Must be a strong writer and communicator and have demonstrated interview skills. A professional appearance is essential. Must annunciate clearly, and maintain a clear delivery during both live and taped reports. Bi-lingual Spanish/English a plus. 4–year college degree required with emphasis in Communications and Journalisms preferred. 3 -5 years’ experience in a medium to major market.
