Position Summary

WTAJ’s award-winning news team is looking for our next all-star!! We have an immediate opening for a weekend photojournalist/editor. The position requires working weekends and most holidays. We are looking for someone with a creative mind, strong attention to detail, and a passionate storyteller. As a photojournalist you will be traveling around to various communities in our coverage area and sharing their stories. Some days you might be required to shoot long-form news magazine type pieces, other days it might be shorter stories and live shots. As an editor, you will be responsible for editing newscasts 5 days a week on Adobe Premiere. The ideal candidate will bring a happy attitude and common sense to work every day along with being a flexible team player. 2 years of experience working in a newsroom is preferred, but not required. As long as you are creative and have a passion for videography, we can train you on the rest.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Shoots and edits news video stories, including daily news, special news, features, sports and live events.
    • Takes direction from, and interact with, the assignment desk, producers, reporters, anchors and production control room personnel
    • Maintains and operates camera equipment as well as company vehicle safely and efficiently
    • Ability to edit raw video to newscast form in a manner to complete the story for the viewer.
    • Proficient in digital media
    • Must be detail-oriented
    • Must present professional image as a representation of the station at all times.
    • Organizes and strings together raw footage into a continuous whole according to scripts or instructions for newscasts and other programming
    • Reviews assembled footage on screens or monitors to determine whether corrections are necessary
    • Trims filmed segments to specified lengths and reassembles segments into sequences that present stories with maximum effect
    • Determines the specific audio and visual effects necessary to complete spots
    • Sets up and operates computer editing systems, electronic titling systems, video switching equipment, and digital video effects units to produce a final product
    • Selects and combines the most effective shots of each scene to form a logical and smoothly running story
    • Confers with other personnel to discuss assignments, work product and desired effects.
    • Must have valid drivers license and clean drivers record

Requirements & Skills:

  • High school diploma; some college coursework or vocational training preferred
  • Minimum two years’ experience operating video recording equipment
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Flexibility to work any shift.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Proficiency with video recording equipment

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

The News Videographer & Photographer must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work near others, work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, the News Videographer & Photographer must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
