THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) is looking for a Communications Director to serve as primary Commission spokesperson in order to provide official comments to the media. In addition, you will plan, write, and coordinate agency press releases to support the Commission at public meetings and you will edit and help to produce and distribute all Commission press releases. Additional responsibilities include assisting with the planning of any Commission press conferences and serving as an editor and lead writer of the Commission’s Annual Report.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Additional duties include:

  • Coordinate media interest in PHRC and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests. Write, develop, edit and coordinate with the Governor’s Communications Office all press releases for dissemination to news organizations, radio and television stations publicizing PHRC actions.
  • Work with executive team to write, edit, and design new pamphlets, flyers, and other printed materials and assist other agency personnel in planning events. Write, edit, design, and distribute the Commission’s Annual Report each fiscal year and write and prepare speeches for the Executive Director and Chairperson.
  • Serve as the agency webmaster, maintain new website format and add fresh content per Commonwealth standards. Act as agency lead on web-based initiatives and projects. Use social media such as Twitter and YouTube to promote PHRC’s mission and attract the public to the PHRC.
  • Serve as agency legislative liaison by responding to constituent concerns and research requests for state and federal legislators and coordinate legislative outreach activities. Track legislation and any committee hearings that may be relevant to Commission operations. Prepare testimony for public hearings and meetings. Attend legislative meetings and visit key legislators to keep them up-to-date on PHRC.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Four years of professional experience in the field of public relations, including three years in a responsible administrative or supervisory capacity; and a bachelor’s degree with major course work in journalism, communications, English, or a closely related field; OR

An equivalent combination of experience and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bilingual
Public speaking experience

WORK SCHEDULE:

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Monday – Friday
Lunch Period: 1 Hour
