Symphony Space is currently accepting applications from NYC-area college and university students for season-long internships beginning this September and ending May 2020. Internships are available in our Literature, Education, Marketing-Audio/Video, Film, Finance, and Hospitality Departments. Students must be able to dedicate 20 hours per week. Department details are included below. The Symphony Space Internship Program offers excellent professional-educational experience and training in the areas of arts administration and production. All interns are individually supervised by department staff; have regular consultations with our Internship Coordinator; participate in day-to-day operations, department and bi-weekly staff meetings; and benefit from career development seminars and field trips. College credits may be available.

LITERATURE

The Literature Intern provides assistance to the producers in all aspects of literary department programs including Selected Shorts: Let Us Tell You A Story, a 12-program live series with readings by actors; Thalia Book Club, a series that brings authors into conversation with the audience about new books and classics; Thalia Kids Book Club for ages 9-12; Selected Shorts Radio Series, a 52-week series broadcast on public radio stations nationwide; Uptown Showdown, a comedy debate series; Selected Shorts on Tour; Bloomsday on Broadway; and Selected Shorts: All Write!, a program produced with the Education Department. (20-25 hours per week, plus select events; $75/week)

EDUCATION

The Education Intern works closely with the Education Director and Manager of Education Programs to help administer in-class workshops, after school programs, and interactive cultural performances serving over 12,000 New York City public, private, and charter school students and their teachers in the five boroughs. The Global Arts: Cultural Literacy & Heritage program focuses on using the arts as primary source documents in social studies curriculum. Selected Shorts: All Write! is an adult literacy program modeled on Symphony Space’s nationally acclaimed Selected Shorts series, serving the New York City adult literacy and ESL student communities. (20-25 hours per week; $75/week)

AUDIO/VIDEO

The Audio/Video Intern works with the Marketing Department on recording, taping, editing, and publishing various audio and video projects, including Symphony Space Live (archival audio recordings of Symphony Space shows), intros for story downloads in the online Shop, and promotional podcasts and video promos for events. Tasks include editing video and audio projects, uploading audio files for online streaming, administrative management for media files and inventory, and occasionally writing copy and recording talent. The Audio/Video Intern works with the Senior Manager of Interactive Marketing & Media. Experience with online content management tools, Adobe Premiere, and ProTools preferred. (20 hours per week; $75/week)

FINANCE & ACCOUNTING The Finance/Accounting Intern assists with tasks in the Finance Department focusing mostly on Accounts Receivable (A/R). Areas of work include: Cash receipts (Rentals, Café Sales, Ticketing); Bank Deposits (preparing and re-coding in Blackbaud’s Financial Edge); Month-end close (Event income computations, Webstore activity, etc.); Account reconciliations (Rentals deposits, credit-card, deferred incomes account). (20 hours per week; $75/week)

FILM Film at Symphony Space consists of a documentary film series, Theatre in HD, and themed film programs. The intern assists the Director of Film Programs with in-house copying of flyers, shipping and receiving of Blu-Ray discs, handling digital media and support material, event management on the website, and data entry of income and expenses. (20 hours per week; $75/week)

HOSPITALITY The Hospitality Intern’s focus is Bar Thalia, the food and beverage hub of Symphony Space. The intern is exposed to all aspects of bar management. Responsibilities include three main components: front of house, back of house, and administrative. FOH covers service, host/hostess, barback/food runner, learning Aloha POS system. BOH consists of restocking and prep for regular bar shifts, concessions shifts, as well as private events and receptions. Administrative work includes drafting and revising event invoices, drafting music agreements, updating web calendar listings, and assisting with creation of marketing and promotional offers (including updates to social media). Applicants should be familiar with Word and Excel. Nights and weekend availability a plus. (20 hours per week; $75/week)
