GENERAL SUMMARY: The News Reporter is responsible for translating and writing news stories; scheduling and conducting field interviews; editing, voicing-over and producing reports for newscast or TV newsmagazine.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of News Director/Editor Chief, produces spot-news or feature reports from field shoots and/or news feeds. Includes scheduling and conducting interviews, shooting and editing video and voicing the final report.
Selects news stories to translate, write, edit and record voiceover according to company standards and deadlines.
Researches topics and interviewees. Prepares a list of questions and points of discussion for guest interviews.
Submits final reports to News Director/Editor Chief for review and possible revision by deadline.
Performs miscellaneous duties as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Fluency in Mandarin and English required, as well as accurate and speedy translation skills.
Ability to accurately and quickly type in Chinese.
Ability to edit using digital equipment and non-linear editing systems.
Ability to use a mini-DV video camera preferred.
Ability to use or willingness to learn news technologies including digital newsroom applications and non-linear editing systems.
Ability to present a professional on-air appearance, including good grammar, articulation and correct pronunciation.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime and on-call duty.
Knowledge of local Chinese community and issues preferred.
Ability to represent the station and attend various community events.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
B.A. Degree or higher in related field is required. A minimum of two years’ experience in writing/translating/reporting broadcast news in Mandarin preferred.
Working hours will vary on a Monday through Friday schedule but normal hours are between 10:00 AM and 6:30 PM Monday-Friday, occasionally weekends.
