The Music Editor works with the Composer, Director, Producer and Picture Editor to achieve the musical ambitions of the film. The Music Editor works with the Composer to help structure the soundtrack and is responsible for all the music featured on the film soundtracks, including: performed music, any sourced music and the score, written by the Composer specifically for the film. The Music Editor also creates the music cue sheet providing a detailed breakdown of all the music featured on soundtracks (including length and function). The Music Editor communicates all picture editorial changes to the composer in musical terms.
The Music Editor attends spotting sessions, music reviews, music recording and scoring sessions to help with any last minute revisions or changes which may require additions or subtractions. The Music Editor also attends any temp mixes and the final sound mix and is available to make adjustments to the music as needed by the re-recording mixers.
The Music Editor must understand and be proficient technically and creatively in the art of music editing. In addition to the technical aspects called upon, he/she is also responsible for ensuring that all music editorial deadlines are met and that the staffing needs are adequate to meet these deadlines.
