Assist with all aspects of Athletics Communications and in developing and implementing a strategic plan for media management of a Division I athletics department; performs tasks to facilitate the publication and dissemination of all athletics communications; assists in the supervision and management of all athletic facilities as directed.
Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations, or directly related field; minimum of two (2) years of collegiate sports information/athletics communications experience, including Graduate Assistant experiences and/or internships; demonstrated experience in desktop publishing, publication design, and printing; Valid driver’s license.
Master’s degree; knowledge of radio/television sports broadcasting and production.
In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this position will perform light work.
LIGHT: work involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, requiring: (1) walking or standing to a significant degree; (2) sitting most of the time while pushing or pulling arm or leg controls; or (3) working at a production rate pace while constantly pushing or pulling materials even though the weight or the materials is negligible. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops various athletics communications related marketing, promotional, and informational materials (e.g. statistics, programs, news release, newsletters, media guides, etc.); performs tasks to facilitate the publication and dissemination of all athletics communications materials for competition, fundraising events, tournaments, etc. (calculates, edits, checks, and revises statistics; drafts promotional team info; proofreads materials, transmits materials to media, etc.); updates materials and statistics as needed to ensure accuracy.
Develops user capabilities of electronic communication; updates intercollegiate athletics information on University website; performs updates to the university athletic department website; maintains and regularly updates social media outlets (e.g. twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.); assists Director in developing capabilities to maximize technology through web streaming, video boards, digital media, etc.
Conducts public relations activities and appearances on behalf of the department and university; attends games, fundraisers, and other promotional events, assists with press conferences, media events, photo opportunities, etc.; develops and fosters positive media public relations for YSU athletic teams.
Serves in an event management role at various home athletic contests; assists in game-management needs as required in conjunction with sports supervisors or coaches; coordinates media efforts at designated home sporting events; communicates with YSU departments and local media of schedule adjustments, updates or venue changes; works with the Penguin Club to assist at various fund-raising events.
Supervises student personnel assigned to the Athletics Communications Office; delegates basic athletics communications duties (i.e., daily press releases, statistics, etc.) and develops departmental media opportunities.
Assists in coordinating statistics, files, and other materials maintained by the Athletics Communications Office for all Division I sports; demonstrates creativity in using information, including hosting and participating in tournaments and championships.
Develops and maintains good rapport and open lines of communication with local, regional, and national media, as well as with the University community, coaches, and student-athletes.
Assists with the supervision of events for all athletic facilities; works independently with the ability and adaptability to use sound judgment and discretion to make decisions in managing the operations of the event, including emergency situations, with efficiency and effectiveness, without direct supervision.
Assists with management (setup/teardown/attend) of non-athletic events (Crash Days, Fundraising Walks, Stambaugh Stadium concerts, etc.) and day-to-day operations of DeBartolo Stadium Club.
Fulfills radio play-by-play, ESPN TV reporting, and radio shows responsibilities as directed.
OTHER FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
Actively participates in public relations appearances and community services activities on behalf of the Department.
Complies with all NCAA, conference, and institutional regulations, policies, and procedures.
Travels with intercollegiate teams as assigned.
Participates on various University, conference, national committees, and other special assignments.
Performs any and all other related duties as assigned or directed in order to promote, further, and ensure the effective and efficient operation of YSU.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision is exercised over student interns, student employees, and game day press area staff.
