WGBH News is one of two local NPR member news stations in Boston. We are a national and regional award-winning multi-media news organization, broadcasting on radio, TV, and digital. WGBH has a combined Radio/TV/Digital newsroom of nearly 100 and ranks among the top five largest public media newsrooms in the country.

WGBH’s commitment to local journalism is significant with staffed news bureaus in multiple locations within the Boston metropolitan area and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including Springfield, Cape Cod, Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, the Massachusetts State House and a street level facility at the Boston Public Library that allows for both broadcast events and other community events.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Television and Multimedia Reporter will be a key member of an expanding multi-media public media newsroom. The reporter’s primary responsibility will be to produce original television news features. S/he will also adapt those stories for digital and radio audiences.

The candidate must be able to generate story ideas on his/her own and become a passionate, curious and informed consumer of issues and topics relevant to Massachusetts. The ideal candidate will have experience producing visually compelling television stories and an appreciation of NPR style radio. S/he should be an exceptional writer, experienced interviewer and visual storyteller, a savvy user of digital media and able to work within a growing newsroom cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure. The ability and flexibility to work across platforms is essential. The Television and Multimedia Reporter will report to the Senior Editor of Television. The reporter will work closely with the radio and digital editors as well as production team members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, research and produce compelling television news feature stories under deadline and clearly communicate vision for final product with news editors, photographers and tape editors.
  • Work with sources, editor and production manager to coordinate television shoots.
  • Adapt television reporting for digital and radio audiences every week.
  • File for radio newscast, either on a weekly basis or as news dictates.
  • Contribute to other newsroom initiatives as needed.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • The ideal candidate will have at least five years television reporting experience.
  • Will have a compelling on-air presence and the ability to conduct informative on-camera field interviews with a wide variety of sources.
  • Will know how to find, use and incorporate visual and sound elements for broadcast features.
  • Will work cooperatively with production and editorial team members.
  • Will be a highly organized self-starter able to juggle multiple projects in various phases of research, set up and production. Will have the ability to work-ahead and plan in-depth stories with news pegs.
  • Will have demonstrated ability to find new and unique stories, break news, develop sources and write/produce creative content under deadline.
  • The candidate must have a strong understanding of the principles of journalism and have a proven ability to present balanced reporting with fairness and fidelity to facts.
  • Experience in radio and digital reporting is a plus.

EDUCATION

A college degree is preferred.
