WGBH Boston is America’s preeminent public broadcaster and the largest producer of PBS content for TV and the Web, including the national series Frontline, Nova, American Experience, Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow, and more than a dozen other prime-time and lifestyle series.

In addition to the national series, WGBH is also one of the major producers of children’s programming for PBS and is also a key player in the production of audio programming through its relationship with the public media podcast producer and distributor, PRX. WGBH is a leader in the creation of educational assets for teachers, and developed what became PBS LearningMedia, a massive, free source of educational assets for K-12 teachers across the country.

JOB OVERVIEW

WGBH seeks a dynamic leader to run its legendary American history series. This creative individual will oversee all production for the series. They will be responsible for the strategic vision for the series, maintaining the DNA of this thriving brand while continuing to evolve the storytelling to best resonate with the audience of today and tomorrow. This executive will be responsible for all aspects of the enterprise including budget, fundraising, donor and funder relations, development of the slate, and ensuring that every aspect of production meets the highest standards of quality and integrity. They will play a key role in continuing the team’s efforts to diversify our makers and our content and to broaden the footprint of American Experience into an increasingly digital future.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the development and production of all American Experience programs.
  • Working closely with producer/directors, shepherd production of each film from concept to final finish.
  • This will include editing and rewriting scripts, overseeing all cuts, consulting on writers, composers, and animators to meet the rigorous standards of Amex and WGBH.
  • Work closely with WGBH colleagues to develop strategy and manage process of fundraising from public and private donors, foundations and corporate underwriters.
  • With the digital, social and station marketing teams, build digital and social audience footprint of American Experience across multiple platforms.
  • Work closely with business and finance to outline and maintain production budget and timeline, ensuring critical legal and cost compliance.
  • Lead the team in hiring key in-house and out-of-house talent, who will continue to elevate the quality of the work on the series.
  • Manage a respectful workplace with a staff of 15-18, and upwards of roughly 10 contract producers at any one time including oversight of compliance with regulations, conflict management, and other managerial duties.

SKILL SET

  • Deep appreciation and genuine passion for American history.
  • Deep respect for the type of long-form history docs WGBH produces, understands what it takes to make them, and understands the critical role they play in generating funding, marketing, and current audience.
  • Understands how to cultivate a new audience. Fluent in new formats and strategic approaches, multiple platform distribution, and the strengths and weaknesses of particular platforms.
  • Understands the role and potential benefits from off-platform innovation such as podcasts, newsletters, smart speaker skills, history education hacks, etc.
  • Deep understanding of the role that fundraising plays in the future of the series. Keen interest in and facility for fundraising, and experience with same. Experience with foundations a plus.
  • Understanding of the value of editorial partnerships and experience cultivating them.
  • A hands-on manager, conversant in editorial as well as budget, contracts, and vagaries of a staff.
  • Has an easy temperament, healthy ego, and high emotional EQ. Upbeat, curious, and enthusiastic. Team player, but with a firm sense of what it means to be a leader.
  • Problem solver. Doesn’t let essential idealism obscure practical choices. An innate collaborator who sees bigger picture both for the series, WGBH Foundation, and system.
  • Wants to run something big and important. Sees American History literacy and public media as an essential part of the solution

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree required. 5-10 years’ experience. Experienced documentary filmmaker with a record of integrity, quality, and excellence.
