Film Director needed for the Short Film entitled “Opposites and Contradictions”. A full cast is presently available, and it will be performed as a play off-Broadway on December 9, 2018 at Theater 80 St. Marks, in New York City. The Film Director may use the existing cast, or may re-cast at the Director’s option. Please also note that other scripts are also available.
“Opposites and Contradictions” is the story of a young man, who may have once been a Psychiatrist, plagued by his own frustrated fantasies, uncertain dreams and mental insecurities. William evaluates his mental state, with the perhaps ghostly or dreamlike apparition, of Sigmund Freud. Throughout the film, William comes into conflict with three characters who are always with him; his Id (instincts), Ego (reality), and Superego (morality). The question of dreams is explored, and William must determine whether he is in reality, or living through a lucid dream.
William comes into conflict with his Id, Ego, and Superego, during his interaction with a woman named Vanessa, whom he would like to date, and, eventually, marry. Id, Ego, and Superego question and debate with William as he ponders whether Vanessa is even real, or a figment of his imagination.
William and Sigmund spend time exploring William’s desires, cravings, longings, and mental health. Sigmund and William evaluate the nature of reality, and dreams, as William eventually falls asleep.
William awakes to find himself in a mental psych ward, writing medical notes about himself, as he encounters Vanessa in his room. Vanessa and William debate each other, until William admits his desire for her companionship. Vanessa fulfills her role as arguably both a real person, and a figment of William’s imagination. Id, Ego, and Superego enter the room, and remark to themselves (and the audience) that William was once a remarkable doctor, who suffered a mental breakdown, thus leaving open the possibilities of the nature of the play-are the scenes in William’s head, from earlier in life or is William asleep the entire time, and simply dreaming? At the end of the play, Williams’ real wife enters the scene and discusses his condition with hospital orderlies.
The character breakdown is:
William – The protagonist of the story, a young everyman, who may have once been a brilliant Psychiatrist. He is unsure if he himself, suffers from a form of psychosis, caused by stress or trauma. William cannot tell if Vanessa, was created by his mind, or actually exists. William is constantly feuding against his Id, Ego, and Superego, three distinct, yet interacting agents in the psychic apparatus defined in Sigmund Freud’s structural model of the psyche.
Id, Ego, and Superego – Three distinct characters, who are always present with William. These three are the innermost representations of William’s mind, and psychological state.
Vanessa – William’s love, or desired, interest, it is unclear if Vanessa is a three-dimensional person, or a mythological spirit of nature imagined as a beautiful maiden inhabiting the play. She engages with William and with him also questions the nature of reality, the nature of love or aesthetics, and William’s own affection for her.
Sigmund Freud – A visitor in William’s dreams. Sigmund and William have a psychoanalytic session, where they delve deep into William’s desires, fears, fantasies, and, most importantly, dreams.
This is a lo/no/deferred position and the film would need to be produced on a micro-budget.
A production facility and/or rehearsal space is available in Queens.
